ABOUT THE SINGLE
Following the release of 2016-17’s Magnificent Ram A album, the associated touring, and the B-sides release the following year, Don embarked on a long road trip...the usual cliché musician “getting back in touch with myself” sort of journey. Of course, strapped across that journey’s rooftop, was the baggage of a broken relationship, a ditched apartment, and the empty boxes of “what’s next”. Your Great Escape was a pre-cursor to all this, a sort of weary warning bell for the year to come. The song was crafted from an afternoon staring at his vinyl collection and wondering if that was all that was important in his space, and if in the end, all that he would be able to salvage of the relationship…the main question being, “who is escaping from whom”?
The song felt like a bookend to the last two albums of work. He envisions “Your Great Escape” as the first in a trilogy of “self-inflicted heartbreak” singles, before starting working this fall in The Joshua Tree on his next album, Important News About Horses and Bears”. Also, wedged in the interim is an interview series Don has started (he is a private pilot) from the cockpit of his tiny 1976 Cessna 150, named Willie Nelson, where he’s interviewing musicians on their upcoming releases…while they try not to freak out from the fear of a flying lawnmower.

Your Great Escape
Words and Music by Don DiLego
I prayed that I’d fade away
When you stole my records in your great escape
But I’ll always remember you
With my Far Away Eyes, and Tangled up in Blue
I’ve managed to right my course
I’ve fought through all our petty wars
But I’ll always wish you well
On your long, long ride through hell
Maybe when you are lonely
You can play my records
Before they’re gone
Before your great escape
I prayed for you on the New Year’s Eve
I crawled out from under my grief
Everyone seemed to pass right through me
Find comfort, and disappear
Maybe when you are lonely
You can play my records
Before they’re gone
Before your great escape
I’ll wait for the sun to die
I’ll stay here till the very last light
If you swim to the other side
I’ll be there just to make it right
I’ll be there just to make it right
Before you’re gone
Before it’s late
Before my great escape
Before my great escape
Before my great escape
Before my great escape
